DEXTROMETHORPHAN; GUAIFENESIN; PSEUDOEPHEDRINE (Contac® Cough and Chest Cold, Dimetapp® Cold and Congestion, and others) is used to treat cough, especially non-productive coughs, and nasal congestion due to bronchitis, colds, or hay fever. Generic dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, and pseudoephedrine capsules or tablets are available.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•asthma
•diabetes
•difficulty passing urine
•chronic cough
•emphysema
•enlarged prostate
•heart disease including angina
•high blood pressure
•history of stroke or mini-strokes (TIAs)
•irregular heart beat
•liver disease
•thyroid disease
•an unusual or allergic reaction to dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, pseudoephedrine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth. Swallow capsules or tablets whole with a drink of water; do not crush or chew. Take your doses at regular intervals. Follow the directions on the prescription label, package, or on the product label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Do not give to children less than 2 years of age without consulting your health care provider.
Elderly patients over 60 years old may have a stronger reaction to this medicine and need smaller doses.
What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose (within 2 hours), take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

•amiodarone
•cocaine
•ergot drugs like dihydroergotamine or ergotamine
•herbal or dietary supplements like ephedra or St. John's wort
•medicines for depression
•medicines for high blood pressure
•medicines for weight loss, including dietary supplements
•other medicines for nasal congestion, cough or cold symptoms (may contain duplicate ingredients)
•quinidine
•ritonavir
•thyroid hormones like levothyroxine
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from dextromethorphan; guaifenesin; pseudoephedrine?

Severe side effects from dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, and pseudoephedrine are usually only seen in patients who have taken very high doses. These side effects should be reported to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•agitation, anxiety, excitement, nervousness, restlessness, or irritability
•confusion
•dizziness or fainting spells
•excessive sweating
•high blood pressure
•numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
•seizures (convulsions)
•severe nausea, vomiting
•severe, persistent, or worsening headache
•slow or troubled breathing
•slurred speech
•tremor or muscle contractions
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•drowsiness
•headache (mild)
•nausea, stomach upset
•rash (mild)
•weakness
What do I need to watch for while I take dextromethorphan; guaifenesin; pseudoephedrine?

If you have a fever, skin rash, or persistent headache as well as a cough, see your prescriber or health care professional. Do not treat yourself for a cough for more than one week without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.
You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know this medicine affects you. Alcohol can increase the risk of getting drowsy, dizzy, or confused. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
Drink plenty of water while taking dextromethorphan; guaifenesin; pseudoephedrine products. This will help loosen mucus.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15—30 degrees C (59—86 degrees F) unless otherwise directed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
